In 1561 the King of Spain Felipe II ordered its construction, it was dedicated in the year 1618 and consecrated on October 12, 1716. The Cathedral has undergone many changes since its construction by architect Martin Casillas. It is a mixture of Gothic, Baroque, Moorish and Neoclassical styles. In combination, the Cathedral is not without grace and rhythm. An important painting, "the Immaculate Conception" by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, is located in the sacristy. The Cathedral is home of the second largest organ in Mexico, of French origin.
