Designed by architect Manuel Tolsá at the end of the 18th century, it opened in 1810 and closed in 1845 after several interruptions. In 1938 and 1939, Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco decorated the inside rooms with murals, that many of the most respected international experts qualified as his masterpiece "The Man of Fire" (El Hombre de Fuego). It has showrooms and a movie theater. In the square outside are two Alejandro Colunga’s sculptural ensembles entitled: The Hall of the Magi and Universal Magician.
